Hello All, and welcome to the next installment of Making my Mark on the world. This is a career focused piece. I talk about my present situation, and the steps that I am taking for the future.
This is a strange title, for these items were in my latest Amazon order. Indeed, I’ve returned to scooping and my shoulder has let me feel it. When I initially started the position (back in February) I laid out the reasons for doing so in The road less traveled. My reasons for returning are similar. In short, it was the fastest way to get an income stream again. It also lets me get out of my apartment in a practical way. My goal is for this to be short-term.
As I have also noted, there is nothing wrong with working in the service industry (even if you are “overqualified” by society’s standards). However, this position is not in alignment with my ultimate career goals. I long to work at a college or university full-time. College has positively transformed my life in many ways, and now I would like the chance to help make college experiences transformative and positive for additional students. That is why I started applying to academic advisor positions, despite some professionals questioning my decision to do so.
Anyhow, I recently heard back from one of the schools that I applied to an advising position for. They would like to talk with me briefly about my interest in the position, and allow me to ask any questions that I might have. This is an exciting development. Regardless of how far I get in the process, I made at least a slight impression or mark (😊) on the hiring committee. That is a win.
Now is where one of the most challenging parts comes in; I need to prepare for the interview. This will involve a lot of research on the school and its policies and procedures. It will also involve continuing to learn more about the advising profession in general. Some of this is built into my resume, and now I need to follow through with it.
In addition to academic advising, I am also interested in content writing positions. I will be working on an application for a content writing position with a travel agency. This primarily involves writing samples. I like this application style because it gives everyone a chance to showcase their work. My background is not that of a traditional writer; I am rebranding myself. However, by having a sample focused application, the company is essentially prioritizing writing ability rather than just credentials.
All of this is to say that I am bullish on the future, but there is still a lot of work to be done. Figuring out my 9-5 job is the next big domino that needs to fall into place. Once this is in place, I can have more peace of mind financially. Once I have that peace of mind, I can begin to focus on more areas of growth. I am still focusing on those now, but I am somewhat limited by the career piece. If anyone reading this is also in DC and/or the remote job market, please feel free to reach out to me. Perhaps we could collaborate some.
