Hello all, and welcome to the next installment of Making my Mark on the world. Yesterday, I wrote about the status of my academic advisor application (here). Today, I wanted to provide a brief update on where things stand.
I did reach out about my status. I was direct. I re-expressed my interest in the position, and I noted that I had seen another position open up online. I mirrored the kind of intentional communication that is so valuable. The results were not what I was hoping for though. I am no longer in consideration for this position. However, I did find out that the position posted online was a separate position. Further, the person that interviewed me actually encouraged me to apply for the new listing.
Not being in the running is obviously a discouraging development. Nonetheless, I am glad that I reached out and received clarity. Now I know. It is on to the next opportunity, including the new job posting within the university. My main question is what do I do differently this time, if anything? Doing everything exactly the same thing is illogical. It satisfies Albert Einstein’s famous definition of insanity (doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results). Figuring out where to change my application is the big question. The most likely area I see is interview prep. I must sell myself and convince the panel that I have what it takes to be a successful advisor.
In all, the main point that I want to make is I remain confident in my abilities to be a successful advisor. I also remain extremely passionate about the prospects of working on a college campus, and helping students optimize their college experiences and their lives. This is something I want. Not getting this position is a setback, but even if I am never offered a position as an academic advisor, I will always remain confident and passionate in this area.
As always, thank you for reading! If you liked this brief post, please consider sharing and subscribing to Making my Mark on the world.
